Mikhail Kasyanov on the new regulations of mass rallies:
The new law definitely puts an end to the constitutional freedom of assembly and demonstration. All references to "international experiences" are cynical fraud, as the law gives the authorities with their tame courts a wide scope for increased repression of civil and political protest.
The authorities are self-convinced that people are afraid of them and continue to threaten the citizens with repressions but will achieve the opposite result. If Putin does not veto this law, he will lose one of the last chances to stop the dangerous escalation of the political crisis. Time and opportunities are running out quickly.
The State Duma by midnight on Tuesday June 5 voted in the second and third readings the bill substantially increasing of the fines and introducing other penalties for violations at the mass rallies. Next day the law was sent to the Federation Council and adopted by the senators.
